The pink ribbons in Faith’s cap represent purity, white, tainted by the evilness of the devil, red. He believes that his wife, Faith is good. Although the devil shows Brown that his father, the deacon, and the rest of the townspeople turned to evil, he will not go with the Devil because of his thoughts of Faith. There is a certain point in the journey when he asks where his Faith is, at this point, he is symbolically seeking his own faith in goodness, or the righteous path and is wondering why he is on this path with the devil. Toward the end, when he sees his wife among the others in the woods, a participant of the ceremony, he loses faith. He wakes up and is lef t miserable, alone and distrustful of all the villagers including his wife. Jean Piaget developed a cognitive approach to studying and classifying behavioral growth in stages. He believed that each child matured and learned at a different rate, so even though children mature in the same cognitive sequence, there might be separation in the achievement of each level from one child to the next (Swartwood, 2012, p. 46). Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development are Sensorimotor, Preoperational, Concrete Operational, and Formal Operational (Swartwood, 2012, p. 49). He asks them to give their views regarding the parable of the lost sheep. This means that Jesus gave his disciples a chance to apply the parable in interpreting their lives. Nolland observes that Jesus never posed questions to his disciples in the book of Luke2. Jesus interacted with his disciples more directly in the book of Luke, unlike in the book of Matthew whereby he challenged his disciples to find the meaning of the parable.
